# What is AI training data, and can you get paid to create it?

AI training data is the material used to help a machine-learning system learn patterns. It can include text, pictures, audio and video. Yes, people can be paid to create or label this material when a project needs their contribution.

You are usually completing a defined task, not building an AI system yourself.

## What does “training” mean?

A system learns from examples during training. For instance, pictures with object labels can help a model learn to recognize those objects. Training involves preparing the data and adjusting the model; it is more than simply collecting files. [Google Cloud explains the process](https://cloud.google.com/discover/what-is-an-ai-model).

For a contributor, the useful question is simpler: what exactly do I need to produce?

## Four kinds of contributor work

| Work | Everyday example | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Creating data | Recording a requested household action | Viewpoint, permissions and submission rules |
| Labeling data | Identifying objects in a picture | Definitions and edge cases |
| Transcribing audio | Writing down recorded speech | Language, formatting and difficult audio rules |
| Evaluating output | Comparing two responses against a brief | Evaluation criteria and subject knowledge |

These are different assignments. A project asking for specialist coding or medical knowledge is not interchangeable with a beginner recording task.

As a concrete example, [Clickworker's photo tasks](https://www.clickworker.com/photo-capturing/) ask contributors to capture images to project instructions for AI development. Availability and qualification still depend on the assignment.

## Where everyday skills come in

Some data projects need visible examples of people handling objects: folding a towel, putting items away or assembling something.

[Wake invites contributors](https://wake.inc/contribute/) to record physical work they know how to do. The contribution is the task recording. Do not assume you will also be asked to annotate it or operate a robot.

For video work, a useful first check is whether the important action stays visible. A neat-looking clip can still miss the hands or object the project needs.

## Before agreeing to a task

Read the payment conditions, intended use of the material, privacy terms and eligibility requirements. Check whether a project asks for personal information, other people's images or access to a workplace.

Only provide material you are authorized to contribute. Ask for clarification before filming if the terms do not explain what will happen to your recording.

## Questions, answered.

Do I need programming skills?

Some AI work requires programming. Many collection tasks instead require a specific language, practical skill or ability to follow instructions.

Is chatting with an AI a paid job?

Using a chatbot does not itself create an entitlement to payment. Paid work requires an actual assignment with agreed terms.

Is every uploaded video used for training?

No. Projects may review, reject or use material for different purposes. Read the project's stated use rather than assuming every submission trains a model.
