# What is egocentric video? A simple guide for contributors

Egocentric video is video recorded from the viewpoint of the person doing an activity. It is also called first-person or POV video. A camera worn near your eyes can show your hands and the objects you are using as you work.

A selfie points back at you. Egocentric video usually looks outward at what you are doing.

## Picture an ordinary task

Imagine putting clean dishes away.

A camera across the kitchen shows you moving between the counter and cupboard. A first-person camera can show the plate you pick up, how you hold it and where you place it.

Neither viewpoint is automatically better. They reveal different information. Use the one the project requests.

Research projects such as [Ego4D](https://ego4d-data.org/docs/) use first-person recordings to study everyday activity. That does not mean every POV video is suitable for every research or robotics project.

## What matters in your recording?

Think about whether another person could follow the action from the footage alone.

| Check | What to look for |
| --- | --- |
| Hands | The important hand movements remain visible |
| Objects | The item being used is recognizable and not hidden |
| Sequence | The recording shows how the task begins and ends |
| Light | You can see the work without dark shadows hiding it |
| Movement | Looking around does not repeatedly lose the task |

These are practical framing checks. The assignment may set additional requirements.

## Try a quick framing check

Set up the required camera and record a short section of the task. Include the movements you expect to make, such as reaching for an object or placing it on a shelf.

Watch the result before starting the full recording. If you see mostly the floor, tilt the camera appropriately. If your hands leave the frame, adjust the position. A mount should stay secure without affecting safe movement. See our [camera and head-mount guide](https://wake.inc/blog/best-pov-cameras-head-mounts-2026/).

Check the background too. Mail, screens, reflections and other people can reveal information you did not intend to record.

## How Wake contributors use it

Wake asks contributors to record familiar physical tasks, such as preparing food, organizing objects and practical work. Start with the [recording instructions and eligibility information](https://wake.inc/contribute/).

The aim is a clear view of the work. Do not add music, transitions or a cinematic edit unless the task asks for them.

## Questions, answered.

Does egocentric video have to show my face?

No. The viewpoint generally looks outward. A particular project may have separate face, voice or consent requirements.

Is a chest camera egocentric?

It can be a body-worn first-person view, but its angle differs from head-mounted footage. Follow the requested position.

Does first-person video directly control a robot?

Not by itself. Recording human activity is different from teleoperating a robot. See Wake's [explanation of the two approaches](https://wake.inc/blog/teleoperation-vs-egocentric-video/).
