# How to earn money from skills you already use at home or work

Cooking, organizing, repairing and making things are practical skills. You may be able to earn from them by providing a service, teaching someone or recording an action for a paid data project.

Start by naming one task you can complete well. Then identify who actually needs that result.

## Turn a broad skill into a specific task

| What you already do | A specific skill to describe | Possible route to explore |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cook | Prepare ingredients or assemble a dish consistently | Suitable food service, lessons or a matching recording task |
| Maintain things | Adjust a hinge or organize tools | Appropriate repair work, teaching or task recording |
| Clean and organize | Sort items and reset a workspace | Local services or a recording brief |
| Sew or make things | Measure, cut, join or finish materials | Commissions, instruction or demonstration work |

These are possible routes, not confirmed paid assignments. Paid services may require permits, qualifications or insurance. Check what applies before offering them.

## Three ways to use the skill

**Do the work for someone.** Sell a clear result, such as organizing a storage area. Agree on the scope, time, supplies and payment before starting.

**Teach the skill.** Help a beginner learn a defined task. Explain what the learner will be able to do, rather than promising expertise after one session.

**Record the task.** Some projects pay for video that shows how an action is performed. [Wake's contributor page](https://wake.inc/contribute/) describes recordings of physical work, including food preparation, organizing and practical tasks. A matching brief is required; filming any chore does not automatically make it paid work.

Choose the route that fits your time and permissions. Recording does not remove setup, review or submission work.

## At work, permission comes first

Knowing how to perform a task does not give you permission to film a customer's property, an employer's process or other people.

Before recording, confirm permission from the relevant people and check workplace rules. Keep customer records, access codes, screens and confidential processes out of view. If permission is unclear, choose a different setting.

For a Wake assignment, read the [Contributor Agreement](https://wake.inc/contributor-agreement/) and follow the task instructions. Never change a safe working method simply to improve the camera angle.

## Choose one useful next step

List three tasks you can do safely and explain clearly. For each, note the equipment, location and permissions you already have. Then compare actual requests with that list.

Avoid spending money on equipment before you have a suitable assignment.

## Questions, answered.

Do everyday skills count without a certificate?

They can, depending on the work. Regulated or specialist services may require qualifications. A recording project may instead ask you to demonstrate a familiar task to its brief.

Can I film while doing my regular job?

Only if the workplace, people involved and project terms allow it. Your existing employment does not automatically authorize commercial recording.

Can I get paid for old videos?

Only if a project accepts existing footage and you have the necessary permissions. Check before uploading.
